India’s weightlifters have once again shown their mettle in the Commonwealth Games 2022 and have given India a total of 7 medals in weightlifting. India’s young weightlifter Harjinder Kaur has given happy moments to all Indians by winning the bronze medal in the 71 kg category. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated her on Twitter.
In the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games, India won a total of 9 medals out of which 7 medals have come in weightlifting. Harjinder Kaur, representing India in the 71 kg women’s category, lifted 93 kg in snatch and 119 kg in clean and jerk and finished third in the event with a total lift of 212 kg. Harjinder Kaur was facing a direct fight with Canada’s Alexis Ashworth for the bronze medal. After Alexis Ashworth lifted 123 kg in clean and jerk, she overtook Harjinder Kaur to ensure her third place. A 19-year-old young weightlifter from Nigeria was considered a strong contender for a gold medal but she messed up all three of her Clean & Jerk attempts and allowed Harjinder to finish in the top three.
The young Nigerian weightlifter had impressed everyone by lifting 100 kg in the snatch round but she failed in her all three attempts in the clean and jerk round and had to settle for fourth place.
Sarah Devis of England lifted a total of 229 kg weight in this competition and won the gold medal. After Sarah Devis, Canada’s Alexis Ashworth finished second and won the silver medal by lifting a total of 2 kg more weight than Harjinder. Harjinder Kaur finished third in this competition by lifting a total of 212 kg and managed to bring another medal in weightlifting for India.
Harjinder’s bronze medal was India’s third medal at the Commonwealth Games on Monday. Apart from Harjinder Kaur, India’s judokas Sushila Devi won the silver medal and Vikas Yadav won the bronze medal, adding two medals to India’s medal tally in CWG 2022.
